La Mesa is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 54,749 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1869 and officially incorporated as a city on February 16, 1912. Its official flower is the bougainvillea. La Mesa is approximately 12 miles (19 km) east of the Pacific Ocean. Because of this, La Mesa typically experiences warmer temperatures than San Diego, which mostly lies significantly closer to the Pacific Ocean. As of the census of 2000, there were 54,749 people, 24,186 households, and 13,374 families residing in the city.
